Trudy ******************* Tent Embassy gets reprieve by Colonel Panic 1:43am Wed Aug 23 '00 The Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Victoria Park seems set to stay during the Olympics following last-minute discussions with Police and South Sydney Council prior to the midday injunction deadline today. Embassy representatives met with Police and South Sydney Council to discuss the Tent Embassy. Ten of the eleven demands made by Council were negotiated away leaving only the issue of the number of tents in Victoria Park outstanding. This issue will continue to be negotiated as South Sydney Council becomes more willing to talk. Numbers are vital for the Embassy's cause and security, ensuring that enough people are on-site to handle any redneck rampages and ensure maximum visibility for the campaign. More cynical minds than I would point out that Council and Police may have been reminded that an eviction would result in enormous publicity for the Embassy, particularly considering the large numbers of foreign and local media milling around today. As always, things may change rapidly as the Olympics approach and pressure from other politicians comes into play.
