This is a discussion group about reconciliation and, hopefully, also of
activism toward justice for Indigenous Australians.
One of the things that is necessary is to keep our eyes open to what is
going on. Human rights violations are directly connected to the
government's attitude toward reconciliation and the lack of commitment
to both is very apparent to some.
As far as manipulating a crowd to start a riot - Phil Ruddock has been
engaged in vilification and slander, without proof, of the asylum
seekers for some time now and this plays right into his hands. I don't
see where the belief that the government manipulated this is so far
fetched. Riots happen in all prisons when people are treated without any
regard for their humanity. It is easy to push so hard that the prisoners
feel they have nothing left to lose.
Not only will the government have made their point about the need for
crowd control, but the image of the refugees will have been damaged
without Phil Ruddock's (visible) interference. This won't last, of
course, he's too much of a zealot not to gloat over this.
