Warning, this is off-topic (unless you consider Howard's mindset part of the topic). There was a picture in The Age this morning of John Howard opening a CSIRO facility. For some (science-related, I guess) reason, he was wearing 3-D glasses. It was so very reminiscent of those old photos of hundreds of men in suits sitting in a movie theatre wearing those daggy glasses. Back to the 50s! Seriously, whoever thought of putting 3-D glasses on Howard to represent cutting-edge science must also be in charge of the massive cutbacks to research in this country. Back, back we go.
