Aborigines, whites, urge reconciliation, criticize Australian
 government

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Activists planted symbolic hands
in a park Saturday to urge reconciliation between black and
white Australians, an early protest in a series of demonstrations
on the plight of Aborigines planned for Sydney's Olympics.
Protesters said a "mean-spirited" federal government is
blocking racial harmony between Australia's earliest inhabitants
and the whites who followed in recent centuries.

Activists placed tens of thousands of colourful plastic cutouts
in the shape of hands on the grounds of Sydney's Centennial
Park, where cycling events are due to be held during the Sept.
 15-Oct. 1 games.
The hand symbol adopted for the demonstration originates
with the Aborigines. For tens of thousands of years, the
indigenous people marked their presence in Australia by
pressing smeared hands against the rock walls of caves.
