The Toronto Star News Updates Sep 11, 17:05 EDT Saskatoon cop to stand trial in abandonment case SASKATOON (CP) - One of two veteran Saskatoon police constables alleged to have abandoned an aboriginal man in the freezing cold has been ordered to stand trial. A preliminary hearing ended Monday with the judge ruling there is enough evidence to try Const. Kenneth Munson on charges of assault and unlawful confinement. The case will be heard by judge and jury. The charges followed a complaint by Darrell Night that two police officers picked him up in their cruiser and then abandoned him on Saskatoon's outskirts in late January. Night's allegation triggered an RCMP investigation into allegations that Saskatoon police routinely picked up aboriginal men and dumped them in remote areas. Of the seven cases being investigated, five involved aboriginal men who died. No charges have been laid in those cases. Defence lawyer Morris Bodnar said he plans to apply for a change of venue for the trial on the grounds that his client would be unlikely to get a fair hearing in Saskatoon. Munson, 43, and his co-accused, Const. Daniel Hatchen, 38, are continuing to be paid until their cases go through the courts following a ruling in August by the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
