Mr Ella said the inclusion of Aborigines helped diffuse some activists'
plans to use the media spotlight to protest against Australia's
treatment of its indigenous people

Too right they did Gary, along with a lot of other contentious issues.
However, there can be no true reconciliation without social justice.

Australia's leaders could not turn a blind eye to the reconciliation push
arising from the Sydney Olympics, SOCOG indigenous
program manager Gary Ella said today.

He said the public's support for Aborigines, such as gold medal-winning
runner Cathy Freeman, was fantastic.

"(The Games were) one of those great events that no-one could turn a blind
eye to," Mr Ella told ABC television.

"I guess it shows there were a lot of people very supportive of Aboriginal
issues, and want to make sure that Aboriginal culture is
showcased to the world."

Mr Ella, a former Wallaby with his two brothers, said the indigenous culture
showcased in the opening and closing ceremonies was
accepted as Australia's image.

"It comes to the stage now where some people have to make some decisions ...
and continue to take the reconciliation process
forward," he said.

Mr Ella said the inclusion of Aborigines helped diffuse some activists'
plans to use the media spotlight to protest against Australia's
treatment of its indigenous people.
