THIS WEEK ON INSIGHT: Woomera, one
 of our most secret institutions

Australia`s newest detention centre has been
dogged by trouble all year- violent protests and
allegations of harsh treatment and inhumane
 conditions.

More than 500 men, women and children have been held at
Woomera in South Australia for almost one year. Mainly Iraqis and
Afghans, they arrived by boat and have been waiting to have their
refugee applications settled ever since. The detainees are kept
incommunicado, banned from making local telephone calls. Radio,
newspapers and Australian TV are also forbidden.

Federal Minister for Immigration, Philip Ruddock, says the
Government`s tough stand is helping to reduce the numbers of
refugees arriving in Australia.

To find out what goes on behind the barbed wire fences, Insight
talks to some newly released refugees, and tracks down a few brave
individuals who break the silence surrounding Woomera.

That`s Insight, this Thursday October 5, 2000 at 8.30pm.
