>From Dennis Eggington of the Perth Aboriginal Legal Service: MEDIA RELEASE Drover's dog swallows bait and ends up crook at Aborigines "Bill Hayden suffers from far too high an opinion of his own credibility," said Dennis Eggington, Chief Executive Officer of the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia this morning. "I would have thought that a person who has so significantly failed as a politician and who added nothing to the national debate on Aboriginal Affairs as Governor General would know better than to stick his head up now. "Demands for an apology, as Mr Hayden should know, are based on the very real damage incurred by the crimes of the past. These are the crimes of non- Aboriginal people. "Indigenous leaders don't need faceless advisers to tell us how to make our arguments. In contrast, Mr Hayden seems to need someone to advise him on how and when to make a statement. "Mr Hayden has a history of entering into debates late in the piece, throwing in hand grenades and standing back to observe the damage. We know that over the past twenty years he has reinvented himself as a conservative. "The problem for Bill is, he is a political irrelevancy, a failed strategist in his own right, whose only use now is as a supposed small 'l' liberal insider who can be used to undermine the arguments of those in favour of an apology."
