Friends,

I do not know much about the indigenous societies in Canada. nor their
cultural mores. I do know that during the early seventies we wee instructed
by the Department that I worked for in the Northern Territory to stop
referring to Settlements and change that name to 'Communities' the term that
still seems to be use.

In Australia the term community, in the sense of the Australian community,
refers to an homogenised society and is the antithesis of what I mean by
'multiculturalism'. It also presupposed the absorption of the Aboriginal
Peoples, both physically and culturally, into the dominant society. This is
the anthrop/historical position that Howard and his Government is pushing
all the time.
