Friends, I do not know much about the indigenous societies in Canada. nor their cultural mores. I do know that during the early seventies we wee instructed by the Department that I worked for in the Northern Territory to stop referring to Settlements and change that name to 'Communities' the term that still seems to be use. In Australia the term community, in the sense of the Australian community, refers to an homogenised society and is the antithesis of what I mean by 'multiculturalism'. It also presupposed the absorption of the Aboriginal Peoples, both physically and culturally, into the dominant society. This is the anthrop/historical position that Howard and his Government is pushing all the time. _____________________________________________________________ Ian Henderson Murdoch University 24 Harfleur Place Perth, W.A. Does this mean that community becomes most important. Meaning > that non-Indigenous who live in communities can share in 'aboriginality? or > aboriginal culture. ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
