The oldest code in OpenOffice is maybe older then Microsoft Office. What I want to say, it might be not as easy as you might think to improve what youz want to improve. We recommend to build OpenOffice from code for starters. It is quite a challenge since our build system is aged and we are in the middle of changes. Also we welcome everything that you seem fit to change. For Code changes we request a Test driven development approach. We use google test library. Welcome to OpenOffice.
