Just thought i'd share with everyone about a project that just launched
that I used RED5 on. It's called the Volkswagen Carfessional. What it is
exactly is a way for Volkswagen enthusiasts to communicate with
volkswagen. It is based of the concept of a confessional booth. (think
MTV realworld) where there in the back room bitching about other people.
Only this one is in a car. So the whole set up looks like this:
There are two computers. One is an admin computer that runs outside of
the car. This serves as the point of entry. The person or people who
want to confess to Volkswagen come to this computer, information is
taken from them and saved. The admin computer is really just a dummy
computer. There is a simple flash app that allows for the infomration to
be taken. But from there it is sent to the computer that is in the car.
The computer in the car is what serves the interior carfessional
experience and keeps track of all the data. There is a video that plays
along with it, basically its a german guy talking about what the
carfessional is, and why they are doing it. (consumer communication with
volkswagen). Then he prompts you to start recording, you press the
button and it starts recording your video. When it's done it takes a
snapshot of you. Then an email is sent with that snapshot of you or
whoever.
The whole set up is pretty simple. The admin computer connects to the
computer in the car over amfphp. The interior computer is running
apache, mysql, php, amfphp, red5. the admin computer just sends the info
the the introrior computer to store the peoples information. then we
store the names of all the files that are created with their records.
From there you can imagine. when the interior stuff is running it just
uses red5 to record video. then I just bitmap data and quasimondo's
BitmapExporter for the snapshots.
The car is really cool. It is a Volkswagen Rabbit. Yeah the rabbit is
back. Volkswagen's Electronic Research Lab and California Concepts
customized the car. There is a touchscreen in the front dash, that is
just hooked to the computer in back. all the electronics are in back.
the car is going to be on tour all summer. i'll try and reply with some
dates and locations. It is at dfferent volkswagen enthusiast events here
and there...
