Hi chaps, Thanks for the many suggestions! Multi threading does seem to be the most portable solution to get around this problem, and when combined with hibernate as an ORM it may end up increasing the speed of our database access.
That said I'll take a look at the Postgres code suggested by Alex, because luckily this is our db of choice. Thanks for all your help, and I'll post code back once it has been implemented.
