Firstly glad to see your project. I will try to answer your questions.

You can use socket or http to invoke methods. Both work. But if you need to upload or download large binary content, you'd better use http.
You may simply add new methods to your Application class and these methods can be invoked via RTMP (socket).
Tha't right. :-)
Red5 is implemented in Java, so if there's a Java stub to talk to gps-receiver, Red5 could make it.
Hello, my name is marco.
I would like to spend some words about my current study-project. I'm studying Media System Design in Germany, actually in the last semester. In the previous semster we get the mission to build an interactive application with one special parameter- the application has to be optimized for the target group "over 50s" (older people).
In this time, we did several researchs, and came to the final decission to build an interactive digital Travel-guide. The concept was created in the previous semester too, now in the current, we have to set up a running prototype. Therefor we would like to do this with Adope Flash. I've got some experience in building applications in flash (Actionsscript 2.0, mtasc and eclipse).
Because I'm the only developer in our six-man-team (uh, it's hard, i know) I would like not changing in completly new programming languages like java or sth like that. Otherwise i'm very dedicated and ready to learn more about expanding my Flash knowledge with Red5.
For background:
Our Application has to run on a Windows System without permanent Internet Connection. Thats why we've decided to build a standalone Application. Zinc! (Multidmedia) supports our intention. Its possible to build an application comparatively builded with Director. Additionaly much more support for activex, databases and much more...
We have one dedicated server. There are running several services (fe. red5, mysql database). The clients are used in holidays. If the passenger finds a way to connect to internet, he should be able to connect to the server. After connection the system syncs parts of both databases (server and client) to update the client.
Our demand on red5
a.) in what way should we best exchange the data between server-client? Via socket or http-request?
The streaming could go via rtmp (socket) or http (progressive). The former is more secure while the latter is reported as more performant.
You can use socket or http to invoke methods. Both work. But if you need to upload or download large binary content, you'd better use http.
b.) Whats the service to dispose the requested data? red5?
You may simply add new methods to your Application class and these methods can be invoked via RTMP (socket).
c.) Our travel-guide shell record videos and capture pictures from the webcam. These files shell be stored on the local drive in series. I heard that red5 is best solution for our need.
Tha't right. :-)
d.) can red5 talks to a serial gps-receiver? I simply want to read out current gps-data.
Red5 is implemented in Java, so if there's a Java stub to talk to gps-receiver, Red5 could make it.
So far we get supported by map and guide. They offers us their SDK, some extra commercial map-sources and customized support.
But currently we got several problems to get their activex-interface run with Zinc! But thats another problem, we'd to solve..
looking forward for some answers!
and hope you understood my english...
regards
Marco!
