ever tried to check out only folders you need or to read an svn book?

Hi i have osx im not sure its the same on pc but rapid svn cant seem to shift select a few directories and then checkout/update, svnx seems to do it but for one folder only but checks out the contents of the folder into a working copy not the directory itself, i dont particularly have the time to find out on command line how to do that, maybe a simple how to would be great.
