Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to do the client side bit. My goal is to allow the use of the built in flash components for streaming without having to do extra coding. I was hoping to intercept the play call on the server and redirect it to the appropriate file without the client having to do anything special.
Thanks for your suggestion though.

Is there a way to intercept a call to NetStream.play and remap it to a different file? I thought at first IStreamAwareScopeHandler#streamPlaylistItemPlay but as it turns out that handler does not even get called if the file doesn't exist which is what I need.
I need to investigate what to intercept (with AOP cababilities of Spring or AspectJ-baked advisor) at server side, anyway you can call a method at serverside on client NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound status event. -- Michael,
