hey man... I saw this line today..
ffmpeg -r 10 -b 1800 -i %03d.jpg test1800.flv

it'll make your sequence a nice video... and re-reading this thread, i
realize how wrong I was,
of course, making it a video will be smaller then a slideshow , having in
mind that it is a video! heheh

Not true, re-encoding it as flash video won't make it smaller then some
simple gd or imagemagick code can do with those filesizes...
Anyway...if you still want to make a video out of it, try ffmpeg... it
makes video out of sequences.
Just for the records, the jpg loading can be real-time as streaming....
