Hi Art,

I'm not a lawyer but I dont think we have any issues with red5 and codecs.
As I understand it the way codecs are licenced you pay for the rights to
encode and optionally decode / playback the format. Red5 only passes the
bytes from file out over the network, no encoding or decoding (playback).
Macromedia will have done deals to licence the audio and video codecs for
use within the flash player. Im guessing this works in the same way that say
Apple paid for mp3 use within the iPod. In essence streaming an mp3 or flv
from red5 is no different than sticking it on your webserver and loading it
in flash via progressive download. Hope that helps to clarify things..

Regards,
Luke

Hello,

are there any flv/mp3 licensing issues with the flash player for either
progressive download or a streaming application? The link

http://osflash.org/red5#project_goals_mission

says red5 supports "Streaming Audio/Video (FLV and MP3)"

but what adobe flv/mp3 licensing issues arise from doing this?

I found these links on the web with do with mp3 licensing:

http://mp3licensing.com/

http://board.flashkit.com/board/showthread.php?t=493879&page=1&pp=20

http://www.actionscript.com/flashweek/00000579.html

All the mp3 links above don't resolve my question.

I have tried to ask adobe this question but they require a support
contract to answer this question, so I thought I would try here first.

Thanks.
