You're not rude – I'm not a tech guy and as such, lack the precision and
lingo in my questions. But I still need to assist my programmers in choosing
the right server, and your help here is mostly appreciated.

You're welcome

I'll repeat my example with impression counting – say someone syndicates the
video and shows it on his blog page (my entire webpage is not served from
my web server, only the video itself). In this case I'll also have to count
the impression. Isn't it the streaming server's job rather than my web
server's?

Now, that's a system requirement you didn't tell us before ;). AFAIK there's
no problem counting each video's petition in your server side app, you just
have to keep track of every call and store the counter somewhere.
Translation: it can be done.

Anyway, I don't want to blab here senselessly. Shall I understand from your
response that these features are supported and trivial? Or are my questions
not specific enough?

Now it makes better sense ;)

Good luck with your project.

guys, thanks a lot for the replies.

I think that my demands from the application are quite basic, and I
understand from you that they should be answered on the client side?

No, no, i meant that some of your requirements should be implemented by
your app, it can be server side (you know, Java coded server/side red5
application).

I thought that if we're using streaming, the client side only handles the
way video is displayed on the screen (control buttons and their
implementation etc) and not the content itself. that's why I was asking
about integrating ads.

To continue Storm (steve's) replies:

2. re counting impressions - yeah, I want to get stats info which is then
forwarded to the site's clients - they should see how many impressions
they've had- since we'll charge for impressions it should be critical.

3. change on the fly - Say someone syndicates the specific page to his own
site and users view the video 30 days after a campaign I made finished. this
means that the same video should be followed or preceeded by a different ad,
that I choose on the server side rather than on the client. In other words,
the same videos should feature different ads over time, without re-enconding
them. in other words, the Flash client should get different info from the
streaming server. no? am I wrong?

Impressions/views, ads to be shown... all of that could go on the database
you'd be using for your web application (where you will insert the video
player). I don't want to be rude but i think that you've got a bussiness
idea but haven't taken the time to do a propper design. What you want/need
to do can be done in many different ways, it just deppends on what you've
got (hw, people, money, time).

Cheers

1. Real-times ads: Insert video ads at the beginning, middle or end

Beginning and end shouldn't be a problem, you just play a playlist instead
of a single video. The middle part could be an issue since you do not want
to preencode, i don't understand how you want to do that...but perhaps you
need to stop the video, show your add on top and then restart the
original... But anyway this is more a matter of your app logic than red5
capabilities.

For the ads clip in the middle, you can use play(someflv, 0, length) and
play(someflv, length, length_from_middle_to_end) to plug it in.

2. Count video and advertisement impressions.

You....just...count....them... ?

3. Ability to change ads on-the-fly for all videos from a
centralized ads management location.

Again this looks like a matter of your own app design/implementation, not
something I'd ask a server/framework to do for me.

With red5 you've got a streaming/VOD server (and a few more things) how
you use it is up to you.

Cheers

Subject: We're setting up a new video sharing website. A few questions
about RED5's ability to match our needs
To: [email protected]

Hello everyone.

I represent a group that is currently developing a new video sharing
website. We have the following requirements for video broadcasting:

Advertising :

1. Real-times ads: Insert video ads at the beginning, middle or end
of each video (without pre-enconding the FLV).

2. Count video and advertisement impressions.

3. Ability to change ads on-the-fly for all videos from a
centralized ads management location.

Does RED5 provide me with these capabilities? Any additional information
you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Matan Offer.
