Depending if it overwrites everything in the webapps directory, I would 
backup your custom webapp and any changes made in the red5 configs and 
run dpkg -i thepackagename :) Maybe the releases should be run via an 
apt source so all you have to do is apt-get upgrade red5 and latest svn 
snapshots apt-get upgrade red5-dev
