Sorry i forgot to mention that i was using windows XP. The red5.sh would be
the equivalent to the red5.bat file for Windows. And by running the red5.bat i
would not have to run ant server to listen on port 1593. I hope this is
correct. When i run red5.bat from windows (not command line)  it loads a
string of jvm1 : at sun,java, org ,red5 .. a long list..some of which i see
unknown source..then at the last line i get

jvm1 at java.lang.thread.run<unknown source>
wrapper : <-------wrapper stopped
press any key to continue

In this case im not sure what that means.

Also many thanks as i have been searching the net looking for answers and
came to the conclusion that i may of been the only one with this problem.
