First utility for me is that it passes across most firewalls
The reason why it passs across firewalls is because rtmps is done ovr port
443, which is th default port for secure SSL connetions, but this is the
least rason why anyone would choose rtmps over rtmp.

i cannot access any regular red5 app (rtmp over 1835) from work.
The reason why you can not acess rgular rtmp (over 1935) is beacuse the
FMS/Red5 server was not setup to be able to accept connections over other
ports than 1935. You have that port closed. If the FMS/Red5 server is
properly setup to accpt connections over 80,443 and 1935 you can connect to
it from anywhere. 80 and 443 are most of the times taken by Apache so only
1935 is left to FMS/Red5.

What is the reason for having rtmps on red5 streaming?
For the same reason why credit card info when you buy something from an
online store is sent over a secure connection to the server: security. In
the case of Red5/FMS all vido/audio /text data sent over rtmps is encrypted
so that only the actual receiver of that data is able to watch the
vido/audio/text streams comming over the secured connection.
