I believe this is caused because quartz is not meant for triggering jobs 
every few milliseconds etc, so it does not function very well as 
high-performance "heart beat" or ticker.

IIRC if quartz job does not finish in time, new job is fired before 
previous finished, meaning that you have 50ms continous ticker that gets 
hung up in DB call, those calls start piling up.
