Burnley 0 2 Manchester United Diego Forlan was on target as Manchester United moved into the quarter-finals of the Worthington Cup with a 2-0 win at Burnley.
Forlan made the breakthrough in the 35th minute - his sixth goal of the season - and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added a second in the 65th minute to put the game out of reach. But United certainly knew they had been in a game as the hosts gave their all. The Clarets made a bright start and almost took the lead in the second minute when Robbie Blake cut the ball back from the byline but Gareth Taylor's shot went narrowly wide of the target. United again found themselves on the back foot after nine minutes when Blake and Taylor again combined. Taylor was marginally off target for the second successive time. Taylor then found space to power in a header from Steve Davis' cross but Roy Carroll was not troubled. United hit back and Beresford did well to parry a close range shot from Ruud van Nistelrooy after Luke Chadwick had supplied the cross. After a couple more half-chances, Forlan made the breakthrough for United with a clinical finish. John O'Shea, drafted into midfield, split the Burnley defence with a through ball and the Uruguayan weighed up his shot before steering it beyond Beresford. Burnley battled back and Carroll showed good reflexes in the 42nd minute to tip over a header from Taylor following a corner from Lee Briscoe. O'Shea should have added a second for United in first half injury time but headed wide from close range. Ferguson brought off van Nistelrooy at half-time, bringing on Solskjaer as his replacement. Burnley created the first chance of the half when Blake got away from Wes Brown and fired in a snap shot that was taken by Carroll. Play switched down the other end and Chadwick picked out Forlan, who touched the ball on to Stewart. But his tame shot was taken by Beresford. Burnley stepped it up again and Davis got away from his marker to get in a header from Briscoe's cross that was cleanly taken by Carroll. Youngster Danny Pugh squandered another glorious chance in the 58th minute when he side-footed a shot wide after being put clear by Solskjaer. But the Red Devils added a second in the 65th minute when Solskjaer smashed a shot high into the roof of the net from inside the area after a surging run and cross by Chadwick. They were looking to build on their lead, not sit on it, and twice came close to adding to it in the space of three minutes. Chadwick cut in from the right in the 78th minute but his finish was poor. Then Phil Neville drove the ball just wide of the target after a neat lay-off by sub Paul Scholes.
