CELTIC last night confirmed they will play Manchester United in a glamour
friendly in the US next summer - as Sports Record revealed four months ago.
The club are also being lined up to face Spanish giants Barcelona and
Italian champions Juventus during their American tour. We revealed in
August there were plans for a series of games across the pond, with United
possible opponents. Now they will face Sir Alex Ferguson's superstars in
Seattle on July 22. United are booked to play Barca, Juve and an MLS side
and Celtic could face one of them in Boston or New York where they have a
large fan base.
A recent market research poll showed there were around a million Celtic
supporters in North America. There is no guarantee Martin O'Neill will
still be boss when the tour kicks off. But he said: "It will be an
extraordinary opportunity for us and a tournament we would be delighted to
take part in. "We would like to think we will be preparing for a Champions
League qualifying round and it would be an ideal way to get set for that.
"Playing against teams of that calibre is a fabulous opportunity." Celtic
were originally due to star in a sell-out charity match for the September
11 victims. It had been scheduled at the end of last season. But US Soccer
bosses were forced scrap it as it would have clashed with an international
match with Jamaica.
