European Cup winner Alex Stepney does not believe
Manchester United have to follow the Italian route to
success.

Stepney watched AC Milan overcome Juventus in a
penalty shoot-out at Old Trafford on Wednesday night
in a match which paled alongside United's thrilling
4-3 win over Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage.

And while the former United goalkeeper thinks there
are some lessons to be learned when it comes to
defending in away games, he cannot see Sir Alex
Ferguson ever adopting the approach which led to a
goalless 120 minutes last night.

"The Italians have a certain way of playing and you
will never change that,'' said Stepney.

"Even in the last couple of minutes last night, both
teams were knocking the ball around, quite happy to
settle for 0-0 and take their chances in the
penalties.

"Their first priority has always been to stop the
other team scoring rather than try to get one
themselves.

"It doesn't seem to matter about the style of play or
the crowd who are coming to watch but I don't think
the fans over here would respond to the same kind of attitude.''
