The Manchester United captain has changed the section of his book dealing with
a notorious episode, says David Bond

ROY KEANES controversial autobiography looks set to cause a new stir after it
emerged he has been forced to rewrite the passage in which he claimed he set
out to deliberately injure former Manchester City player Alf Inge Haaland.

The Manchester United captain was banned for five matches and fined 150,000
last October after he was found guilty by a Football Association tribunal of
deliberately trying to injure Haaland and profiting from the incident by
writing about it.

But as part of the conditions of his punishment, Keane has been told to remove
the controversial claim from a new edition due out next month.

Eamon Dunphy, Keanes ghostwriter, said the controversial paragraph has had
words omitted to suit the decision of the tribunal.

Words have changed in the section about Haaland so now there is a semantic
difference in the passage, Dunphy said. It will be understood differently.

Keane was sent off for a vicious tackle on Haaland in Uniteds game against
Manchester City in April 2001. In his autobiography, published last August,
Keane described how he set out to hurt Haaland.

The notorious quote read: Id waited long enough. I f*****g hit him hard. The
ball was there (I think). Take that you c***. And dont ever stand over me
again sneering about fake injuries.

In interviews conducted before publication, Keane said he did not regret the
tackle. Even in the dressing room afterwards I had no remorse, he said. My
attitude was f*** him. What goes around comes around. He got his just rewards.

But publication of the quote caused uproar and within days Keane recanted his
remarks. I have never in my career set out to deliberately injure any player,
he said. In the incident involving Haaland, I was making a genuine effort to
play the ball. The words in the book represent a degree of artistic licence.

The amended quote for the new paperback edition was agreed by Keanes
representatives as part of the FA disciplinary process. Publisher Penguin has
confirmed the change to the passage but will not reveal specific details about
the editing.

Legal sources involved in the FA tribunal say Keanes lawyers agreed to the
changes. One of his advisers said: Dunphy rewrote the paragraph. It had been
agreed with the tribunal and all legal aspects of the new edition were looked
over in detail. The edited version will be checked by the tribunal. The FA
says it will examine the paperback after its release.

The new edition will have an extra 6,000-word chapter about other Keane
controversies since the hardback came out. Dunphy added: Roy and I were
careful after what happened last time. The chapter concentrates on Manchester
United and winning the Premiership. He explains how his injury affected his
decision about returning to the Irish team.
