You might want to explain why it's important for you to be able to detect if a List is populated by a reference or by pages being connected. At a template-level I'm not sure why it would matter. The purpose of a template is to organize content for display purposes. Normally it doesn't matter how the element was populated; what matters is that the element is populated.
