To just get the parent pages up the tree for a breadcrumb trail, you  
need to look at the settings you have set for this template under  
Navigation Areas. To just bring back the pages for the breadcrumb  
trail you need to have the template set to  display "all levels" and   
"Selected" pages. What this does is display the active nodes between  
you and the homepage in the navigation structure, ignoring any other  
pages. No other scripting is necessary :)

As Henry mentioned earlier... the Up and Away project is your friend  
for these sort of settings and examples :)
