No need for any struggle. If your Verity is configured all properly, and the content that contains those xml tags are of "xml" type, Verity treats all xml tags as "zones" and therefore searchable. You just need to specify those tags as "context-tags" and the content will show up.
If those tags you mentioned reside in a content of "html" type, you need to map them into Verity data field. There is plenty of documents on that subject you can find on the community site or OpenText KC site.
