We recently had to abandon the use of breadcrumbs for a project I work
on, partly because they were deemed unnecessary (a view on which I
disagree) and partly because they were so broken - in pretty much the
same manner as you describe, plus a few other problems! From what I've
learnt:

1. The use of Target Containers *really* complicates things

2. I've never seen the built-in breadcrumb functionality in use; I
suspect there's a good reason for this (although it might have
improved in more recent versions of the CMS)

3. You can, of course, achieve the functionality manually using
standard data controls, assigning the full breadcrumb control on each
page - that's obviously a lot more work than should be necessary,
though

4. There's /probably/ a good navigation manager solution, but I'm not
familiar with that product
