Maintenance is required to get product updates as well as things like transferring serial number to different IP addresses if you're IT infrastructure changes. An old client of mine was recently bought out in an acquisition, decided to cut the maintenance contract prior to being bought out. After the take over their IT infrastructure changed and Red Dot either refused or made it very difficult to transfer serial numbers to a different IP.
