Thanks for the reply - I have managed to solve this particular instance, so thought I'd post what happened.
I tried all your suggestions and had given in, and was creating a duplicate page when I found out that the master page setting for the content class of the affected page had reverted to not be a master page. After setting the content class master page settings correctly again, the page appeared fine in the navigation again. Yay! As to how the master page settings got reverted to the default, I don't know whether that was random reddot behaviour or random user behaviour, I'll keep an eye out for this happening in the future though!
