If you are looking to go to 9.0, then it is definitely a good choice. Apart from this upgrade, there is in addition a service pack for 9.0 named 9.0_SP1_HF3, in which the single threaded Page Builder COM Process was rewritten in .NET, resolving several of the issues and improving the CMS performance in different areas.
