Generally its advisable to attempt to generate links in Navigation
Manager. So the intended usage of Rendertags to generate links would
be in a navigation area designed to generate your list not solely in
rendertags. This should give you access to the current index and other
meta-info to achieve your solution.

other ideas to consider:
- hybrid of list and rendertag. List to generate links and rendertags
to pull data from deep levels. NOTE: this is a slippery slope if your
list can grow large of recursively generating code.
- delivery side (Delivery Server/LiveServer) search or targetting to
dynamically compose the list if it is highly mutable.
