Generally its advisable to attempt to generate links in Navigation Manager. So the intended usage of Rendertags to generate links would be in a navigation area designed to generate your list not solely in rendertags. This should give you access to the current index and other meta-info to achieve your solution.
other ideas to consider: - hybrid of list and rendertag. List to generate links and rendertags to pull data from deep levels. NOTE: this is a slippery slope if your list can grow large of recursively generating code. - delivery side (Delivery Server/LiveServer) search or targetting to dynamically compose the list if it is highly mutable.
