I had that problem once, too. So I published it to a local folder. And than a batch script packing a zip, copy it on the network drive and there an automatic script unpack it.
A shared drive can be slow when it comes to create there new files. I think the CMS handles UNC like the local file system. Create directly there. FTP is create the file and than copy it.
