Thanks for the feedback Tony. We received very similar feedback from
initial users who didn't notice the "left" and "right" arrows at first.
Recently a message was added "swipe for next article" on the main hero
image, but I voted for (and lost) having a brief user instruction lightbox
on first visit.

Apparently user discoverability is valued in UX, but only to a point I would
expect.

Analytics shows low bounce rates from the landing page so it seems most are
finding the navigation system for themselves.

You wouldn't believe how much time went in to getting the swipe system
working properly on all the device! What a pain!!

Some of the considerations:

* changing page heights - what if you swipe into a page from below
the bottom of the next page

* delay loading pages - we only preload the next and prior pages

* DOM too big for phones/tablets - at about p4 the DOM is so big
there is a noticeable lag on lower powered devices (the iPad stopped
altogether) so we start unloading pages

* Analytics triggering - we have to do Google triggers manually

* Page load errors - fallback/retry mechanism for when a load fails

*         Animation - we use CSS3 page transitions, except when we don't;
iPad won't tolerate a page transition and a drop-down list (the content from
the drop down doesn't respect the page transition position so when the
transition is finished we reset the position using normal CSS offsets

Don't try this at home kids. We forked 3 libraries and bolted a ton of our
own code to make it all work.

Result is pretty good I think.

Richard, I really like the alternative treatment, where content is offered
when the user scrolls left and right. From a usability standpoint, I wonder
if there should be more visual cues that the user can get more content
sideways. I only found it because I play with sites. But if I were looking
for information I might have skipped it.
