Joel,
The SmartAPI uses RQL via the official WebServices, so both MS SQL and Oracle 
installations are supported.

We thought about implementing some features in SQL directly but then we loose 
the possibility to access the data from places where the DB connection is 
blocked. Maybe in a future release.

However, it is definitely worth to use the SmartAPI to have a clean, 
object-oriented and very well tested API to work with. CMS 7.5-11.2 are 
supported.

This looks really nice, what flavors of SQL does this support? Just MSSQL or 
does it support Oracle as well?
