Yes. And you don't need to recompile the kernel to get any of this
happening.
Load the ide-scsi module in an initrd (see the mkinitrd utility), then
add the ide-scsi= line to the kernel bootprompt (via lilo).
I've had this working here with rh61 like this (ie, two ide cdr and
cdrom devices working on the same box).
If kudzu is being too smart for its own good, then disable it at
bootup (chkconfig --level 2345 kudzu off). Once I know I have a
hardware-stable system I do this myself, and even on some of the boxes
that do change I have resorted to turning the bloody PITA thing off :)
