For the kernel, I let the kernel hackers decide. I've noticed I get
different options with gcc 2.95 than with egcs, so I surmise someone
there's done some thinking about it.
For general work, it's as well to evaluate their use for yourself.
Consider that using unusual options is more likely to cause problems. If
you find the performance difference insignificant, then I suggest you play
safe.
