Here's one even Alan may not know about (hoping to surprise him, but
he's an old hand so probably not)

In the stand alone info browser there is a very powerful command
called `index-apropos' that will do roughly what `index' search does
but do it through the entire /usr/info directory, and any others that
are in the path.

It will assemble hypertext `links' of all the hits so that clicking or
entering on them will transport you to that document.  Press "l"
(lower case el) to return to previous screen.

I'd really like to see that command integrated into the emacs info
browser but far as I know nothing quite like it is available there.

Try this.... start info and then press:
   M-x index-apropos <RET> regexp <RET> 

Some of it will depend on what you have installed, but I think even
skeptics will be impressed.
