The XFree 4.x Matrox G400 DRI support has historically been buggy.
There has been a long standing bug where if you obscured a running OpenGL
app (or switched to a different virtual desktop), the X server would
wedge.
There was a fixed checked into DRI-CVS a few days ago, and after much
banging on it, it is rock solid for me. On a PIII 850, G400Max, 1600x1200
16bit GNOME desktop, I get 1200 fps with gears.
I've tried out many xmms OGL plugins, and as many OpenGL apps as I could
get my hands on.
It would be nice if whatever XFree ships with RH7.1, it would use a recent
mga_dri.so snapshot from DRI-CVS.
