As I just mentioned, I used to use IBM's Visual Age for C which includes an 
editor (comparable in power to emacs, but with a more modern face) (but you 
can use another if you want), a GUI builder, a DB builder, compiler and all 
the tools, IDL compiler and comprehensive documentation for everything all in 
a single package.

I didn't need to go and buy other books because all the information I wanted 
was right there, and easy to find (I could lookup the documentation for any 
particular function directly from the editor).

In contrast, on Linux, one needs numerous books - books on C, books on C++, 
books on GNOME and/or KDE and/or Motif.

Yes, I've seen kdevelop. It's a good start.
