I had an interresting little run-in with a 40 Gbyte Maxtor drive. I don't regard hdparm as an especially good guage of drive performance, but I generally reckon a drive that hdparm shows is slow is slow and vice versa. I have a system with a 40 Gbyte 5400 rpm ATA100 Maxtor drive on an ATA100 interface, 80-pin cable, and hdparm was reporting less than 10 Mbytes/sec. I grabbed another, attached to IDE1 with a 40-pin cable and got about 20. The two drives were the same model, and their serial numbers differed by about 23. I partitioned the second, copied my system over and installed it in place of the first. hdparm reported over 30 Mbytes/sec. Go figure;-) The machine's a lot faster too;-)) -- Cheers John Summerfield Microsoft's most solid OS: http://www.geocities.com/rcwoolley/ Note: mail delivered to me is deemed to be intended for me, for my disposition. _______________________________________________ Redhat-devel-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-devel-list
