Randy,

I'll bet that if you do a 'which named' you will find that it replies with
'/usr/sbin/named' and not '/etc/rc.d/init.d/named' (I am not in front of my
machine so I may have these paths slightly wrong). If I am correct than what
is happening is that it is picking up the named binary and not the named shell
script that impelent start/stop/restart. Make sure you are invoking the named
script and not the binary and you'l' be fine.

Remember that even if you are in /etc/rc.d/init.d directory, unless '.' is on
your PATH, you will have to say './named' to invoke the script.

HTH!
