Salut Patrick,

in french: merde! (Cambronne, si je me rappeles bien ;-)
this seems like a problem in your hardware configuration,
what kind of video card do you have, also you're running
linux on a pc desktop or a laptop? Maybe there're conflicts
in IRQ assignement or base addressing, also your video card
is listed properly in the supported card list database?

this is a new fresh installation on a new pc or you did an
upgrade to RH 5 from a working RH 4.x with X OK ?

i'm just a little confused that nothing works...
(the vga16 at least, it uses such basic features that
all cards support nowadays)
also i beg your pardon for the wrong thinking
of Xconfigurator... i never used it, so i was convinced
that it wasn't X-based (extrapolation fails so often...).

also have you checked to start X with something like:
$ X -probeonly > /tmp/xoutput 2>&1
(this will put in the file /tmp/xoutput the check that X should do
on your setup and video card), also the SuperProbe
command could be useful to probe if your hardware
is well recognized (see man SuperProbe);
try these first, then, if nothing happens, check
the video card irq for conflict problems, also report to the list
the output of these commands (e.g. i don't have any
experience with laptops, maybe someone else could help you).

finally, chek also the suse site (www.suse.com) if your
video card is a newest one, the people at suse distribution
are funding the xfree86 project and making drivers for
new hardware, perhaps you could find some info on your.
not to say, check also the main site: www.xfree86.org .

a bientot
ciao fede

p.s. federico, pas frédéric - sigh - j'ai eu du mal
a l'expliquer dans mes experiences françaises... :-)
