It's not strictly necessary to go to single-user mode.  Users that are
logged in while you reset utmp will notice weirdness, but it will go away
when they log out.

>       cat > /var/run/utmp
> followed by
>       ^D

Save some typing.  Just do

> /var/run/utmp

will do the same thing. :)
