According RedHat's Custom-X-Tips:
xsetroot -cursor_name <cursorname>
what you want is:
xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr
other versions:
xsetroot -cursor_name {drapped_box, hand1, hand2, iron_cross, plus,
top_left_arrow, watch}
