How did you "sen[d] this file to it"?
Try using Minicom. Once you invoke Minicom from the command line (using
the command, "minicom", press Control-A, Z and configure Minicom to use
whatever port you want to use (ideally you've already pointed /dev/modem
to either /dev/cua0 or /dev/cua1, so use /dev/modem). Once Minicom is
configured, try entering the command, "AT", into the Minicom window.
If you get an "OK" response, your modem is working and the problem is
somewhere else. If you don't get an "OK" response, try using the other
port (cua1 if you used cua0 before). If you've tried both ports, you
likely have a misconfigured IRQ, COM, or IO port, or your modem *must*
be configured via Plug-N-Play, which may render it useless (or at least
beyond my ability to help you with it).
