Yes, there is an easy and simple solution to your problem. Type
the magic incantation "linux floppy=thinkpad" in at the lilo boot prompt,
and Linux will then understand the thinkpad's floppy drive! :)
Actually, there is something a slight bit odd with this drive,
something about pins/drivers/DCL switched... I am not sure on the
specifics, just that without telling Linux upfront that this is a thinkpad
floppy you are working with, it will not be able to use the floppy
correctly. Probably after you get linux installed, put the line:

        append="  floppy=thinkpad"

in /etc/lilo.conf under the configuration for booting linux. Then reload
lilo, and then every time you reboot, you should be set to go to use the
floppy drive.
I have a Thinkpad 360CE that I installed Linux on a few weeks ago,
and have just about everything running well. Linux in general works well
on this system. Only problem is some oddity in handling the APM (throws
wierd, harmless errors), and the fact that most of the APM support
requires the assistance of DOS TSRs, etc... Basically, boot DOS, get the
laptop in the state you want BIOS/APM wise, and then it will stay that way
after you cold or warm boot to Linux. Some day I need to get APM support
sorted out on it, but for now it works well enough.
Anyway, if you have any more problems or questions, feel free to
email me directly about them, and I will try and help you out! Good Luck!
