i use pine-in-an-Xterm + procmail.  this has the advantage that you dont
*need* X to read your mail.

HOWEVER, this is probably not what you are asking for.  recently, i tried
using the Netscape Communicator mail client.  it's really not too bad, at
least from a cursory run-through:  fully GUI, displays attached images
etc.  it also has the advantage that it will peacefully co-exist with
pine's mail folders (although it does pollute your mail directory with its
own folders. grrr...).  it also has a decent news reader built in, to
boot. oh yeah, and a web browser :) 

worth giving it a try, imho.
